Well, the Supreme Court finally came back with their decision on Internet porn yesterday. It wasn’t a good ruling for anyone who likes free speech. They basically said that you can prosecute webmasters in California for running a website that some 8 year old kid in Utah finds offensive. It’s a stupid fucking ruling and one that shows how far behind the times the justices are. There was no conservative/liberal split on this one, it was 8-1 with only one judge having any sense. He’s probably the only one who’s ever logged onto the Internet too.
The good news is that they tossed the case back to the lower court to try to figure out what to do with it. It still can’t be enforced, so we’re no quite on our way to prison yet. Give them a few more months for that. I still think the whole thing is bullshit. You can’t limit everyone’s free speech rights just because some kid might get offended by what you say. Even right wing anti abortion protestors should be afraid of this type of thinking, because they are the ones who like to try to out-offend everyone when protesting whatever it is they like to protest.
Well, that’s my update. The bottom line is that nothing is quite decided yet. The lower court is going to have to make some kind of ruling and then we’ll see where that leaves us. Until then, support free speech by cursing a lot in public.
